Have a taste of the Dunkirk spirit – From the Belgian border to the walled town of Gravelines.

Well known throughout the world as the scene for the 1940 evacuation, Dunkerque seamlessly combines a wealth of history with fabulous boutique shops, hypermarkets, delightful restaurants, a stunning golf course and miles of sweeping sandy beaches at the seaside resorts of Malo-les-Bains and Bray-Dunes.

The peaceful walled town of Gravelines was left surprisingly unspoilt during the great wars and still retains a great deal of French architecture to savour. In addition to the city itself there are the boat rides on the canals to enjoy.

Not to be missed this summer: the first French stage of the 2022 Tour de France departs from Dunkerque on 5th July!

Walking through the 11 acres of formal gardens at Penshurst Place is truly transportive. Divided into 11 garden rooms by over one mile of yew hedging, it’s little wonder why Penshurst Place remains a popular choice for visitors seeking a variety of colour and form in a garden of significant historical importance.

Amongst the many garden highlights is the Italian Garden – originally laid out in the 1560’s by Henry Sidney the Italian Garden and the various other smaller rooms began life as kitchen gardens, hosting a variety of fruit trees and sink ponds. Sir Henry’s layout has remained virtually unchanged for the succeeding 460 years.

Add to this a further 10 garden rooms featuring well over 5,000 roses, almost 500 fruit trees, 12,500 spring flowering tulip, an enormous Adventure Playground, ponds and fountains, ancient trees and parkland, lakes and woodland, statues and topiary and it is easy to see why Penshurst Place is one of Kent’s most enduringly cherished gardens. www.penshurstplace.com
